Importance of Religion in Modern Society

How Religion, Whichever You Choose, Can Serve as a Uniting Force in the World

Introduction

The need to believe in something outside of ourselves, a “higher power”, is an idea that holds a lot of importance not just for an individual, but for society as a whole. Different cultures have tried to explain what this higher power is, and many have given it the name of God. Religion has had major importance throughout the years, and though there have been times when that importance has become less, throughout the recent centuries and in our modern society it is still relevant and very important. For that reason, in this article we will be discussing the topic of the importance of religion in our modern society.

Importance of Religion in Modern Society

Religion, by definition is the belief in something that is or appears to be super human and which controls or seems to control things. It can also be defined as a system of worship and praise for this “something” or the pursuit of or an interest in something to which people place supreme importance. So, by the first definition people have ascribed super human power and control to the belief in “God” or many different gods which all can do things or have been given powers that are greater than any human could ever achieve.

In ancient times these included things like supreme knowledge and learning capabilities, the ability to move objects that seemed impossible for a regular human, and even the ability to provide light. By these definitions, if we were to go back a thousand or more years into the past with the technologies that we now have access to we would be seen as gods by the people of that time. Imagine being able to take a common day airplane or helicopter to the ancient Mayans. They would either begin to worship us or try to kill us, either way we would be seen as “godly”.

Now, why is religion so important to modern society?

Prophet Kofi Danso believes it is important because religion gives people a sense of communion and they feel as though they are heard by a group. Humans are a social species and so they need a way to be around people who accept them. Also, the belief in a higher power who can help them if they simply “just ask” is a much better solution to them fixing their problems alone. Religion has played a huge role in people being able to find solutions to problems, getting rid of addictions, finding love, increasing their financing, and many other similar things. Belief in a higher power, in a God, allows one to find themselves and connect at a deeper level than if we were simply living day by day without believing in anything.

We also believe that religion is important because people have believed in it for so long that it is not only a tradition, but something people accept without question. It’s like a theory that is so hard to prove, but so believable that it becomes the only reality. Now, there are hundreds, if not thousands of religions around the world so how do we know which one is the “right” one? We don’t, and that may be the biggest reason why it is important, because it allows humanity to keep searching for an answer which is the exact same thing that science does in order to create breakthroughs. If we were to simply accept one theory of the universe, we would stop all further searching and accept that one theory, but if there are lots of theories and we test each one then we will find out the truth much sooner. The theory, or religion, which proves to be the most accurate in its teachings and predictions will be the one closest to the truth.

Prophet Kofi Danso believes religion is important as well because it doesn’t necessarily have to be spiritual for it to be a religion. If we focus on the third definition, religion can be going to the gym and working out, painting, making music, or anything in which people place supreme importance. If more people made health their religion and stuck to a healthy lifestyle there would be less obesity, but people choose to follow their own religions for a certain reason, sometimes without knowing.

Conclusion

In conclusion, in this article we discussed the topic of religion and how it has played a major role in society up to the point we are at now. For that reason, religion has been and still is important in modern society and becomes the solution to people’s problems. It is important because it gives them a certain sense of safety and support from a higher power. Though religion doesn’t have to be spiritual for it to be a religion, there’s a very positive effect when hundreds of people join in one place for a common positive purpose, and as long as we continue to have faith, religion will do wonders in your life.
